General Safety Tips

Washington D.C. is a beautiful and hospitable city that is open for business! The following information is provided to help ensure the safety, convenience and success of your visit to Washington D.C. or any destination:

General Safety at Conferences


> Travel in well-lit areas at night, and don't walk alone.
> Aggressive panhandling is discouraged by D.C. law. Please refrain from direct contact with panhandlers.
> Do not display cash openly. Use travelers checks whenever possible.
> Park in well-lit areas. Remove all belongings from your car or lock them in the trunk.
> Always lock your car and take the key.
> Remove your conference name badges before leaving the conference site.

At Your Hotel

> Secure valuables in the hotel safe or safety deposit box.
> Locate fire and emergency exits and study evacuation procedures.
> Lock and chain the door. If you detect any suspicious activity or noise, contact the front desk or hotel security.

Public Transportation

> When using the Metrorail system, be alert to strangers. If you are concerned, walk to an area where you see other travelers. When in doubt, ask a uniformed station manager or Transit Police officer for assistance. Public phones are located on train platforms and near farecard machines. Property lost can be sought at Metro Lost and Found, Monday - Friday from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. For details, call (202) 962-1195.

> When using taxis, make a note of the cab name and number in case you lose something or want to make a complaint or compliment. If you have additional questions about taxi services, contact the DC Taxicab Commission at (202) 767-8319.
